Art Council Highlights Pieces Throughout City

Orange Country Register - November 4, 2014

Eight pieces of public art from across the city will be honored today by the Anaheim Arts Council for originality and accessibility.

The annual Art in Public Places Awards ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall and open to the public.

“We’re always excited to present the best public art pieces, because they add to the beauty of Anaheim,” said Helen Carter, chairwoman of the Art in Public Places Committee.

The honorees:

‘Together We Can Do It’: A landscape mural spanning a St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church wall is receiving the Julie Mayer Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Anaheim Arts Council, named for a former board member. The mural was painted by students of Creative Identity, a nonprofit serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Cancer Gave Me A Fresh Set Of Eyes And Reawakened My Spirit

Cancer Gave Me A Fresh Set Of Eyes And Reawakened My Spirit

Cancer is not always a death sentence but an invitation to live, a wake-up call to be present in the moment, a permit to love without holding back, a chance to forgive, a reason to be accepting of all people, and an order to slow down to take time to really see and smell the flowers.

I do not live in fear but I embrace the beauty that surrounds me and like the flower I continue to grow, survive and blossom.

Cancer accounts for nearly one in four deaths in America, making it the second leading cause of death.

In fact, this year, more than 1.6 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed and over 585,000 cancer deaths will occur.

On the positive side, there are nearly 14 million cancer survivors alive in America today.

Most of us know someone who had had cancer and it might even be you. As such, we are all affected by this terrible disease, which takes on many forms.

My own personal cancer journey began about 20 years ago.

Hope Murals Project

Artist Sandy Fisher was selected as the winner for the City of Anaheim to have a mural created of her art work titled "Grow, Survive, and Blossom" as part of the 10 year anniversary of the Lilly Oncology on Canvas (LOOC) Art Competition, which is marking this milestone year with 10 murals in 10 cities across the United States and Puerto Rico. Fisher's original art piece and a narrative were submitted in 2008 to the competition. During a convention of oncology nurses in Anaheim, attendees helped to paint the large mural, which was comprised of 12 panels. On May 6th, the mural was dedicated at the Main Libray in Anaheim with a ribbon cutting ceremony and speeches, including one from Fisher.

Santa Clarita Vending Machine Dispenses Art

Santa Clarita city officials are hoping residents might forgo the chips and soda next time they buy from a vending machine and opt instead for something a little more edifying: a piece of art.

On Thursday at the Art Walk in downtown Newhall, the city debuted its new Art2Go vending machine in an effort to whet the public's appetite for culture. Deposit $10 and the machine dispenses a miniature piece of original art, such as oil paintings, watercolors and tile work.

"The idea is to get people to start appreciating art," said Jeff Barber, Santa Clarita's arts and events supervisor.

Most of the participating artists live in the Santa Clarita Valley, and proceeds from their work will go toward funding city-run arts education programs, city officials said.

"The artists who have created the paintings have put their heart and soul into these little tiny pieces just to support us," said Donna Avila, Santa Clarita's community services...

Artists Abound At Outwest

OutWest Boutique & Cultural Center on Old Town Newhall’s main boulevard will host a holiday open house and artists reception Thursday, Dec. 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with visual artist Sandy Fisher and stained glass artist Jeff Curtis.
Glass artist Laila Asgari, Pulitzer prize-winning art photographer Ken Lubas and Native American gourd artist Nadiya Littlewarrior will join in the festivities, too, with with special holiday-themed works of art and ornaments.

Fisher, a photographer and painter living in Newhall, says she’s motivated by “the desire to share the awakening in my soul which is fueled by the infinite beauty and mystery of nature or the scene before my eyes.” She approaches subjects with a fresh perspective and uses dramatic natural lighting to “draw the viewer in to take a deeper and more intimate look. I also hope that viewers will become refreshed, renewed and as filled with a sense of wonderment as I am by the splendor and majesty of nature.”

She Is A Picture Of Victory

FROM THE SIGNAL NEWSPAPER --- December 2, 2008
Reporter: Tammy Marashlian

Sandy Fisher remembers two years ago when she took the photo she now calls "Tranquil Water Lily."

That day in July, Fisher, 49, had finished chemotherapy and radiation treatment for her spine cancer.

It was the second time she beat cancer. Her first diagnosis of cervical cancer came in 1994.

With her treatment complete, Fisher decided to leave Stanford, where she was treated, and spend the day in San Francisco.

She turned a corner and stumbled upon a water lily that sat peacefully in a pond. The water's reflection caught the purple flower and set the stage for the perfect snapshot.

"For me, it was an omen that I would have peace," said Fisher, a Saugus resident and mother of two.

The portrait now hangs in the hallway at the Canyon Theatre Guild in Newhall as part of Fisher's "With Eyes Wide Open" exhibition.
